Architecturally Elegant Residences in a Development Befitting Rhinebeck’s Character

Hudson Valley Rhinebeck proposes to develop 36 elegantly designed condominiums at 6-71 Springwood Drive in Rhinebeck, N.Y. The development, called Rock Ledge, will enhance the community in several ways.

Its residential use will preserve the rural and historic character of the 135.8-acre site, a former estate initially developed in the first decade of the 20th century. Rock Ledge’s residences and amenities will be created in the Manor House, Carriage House and Stone Barn – historic gems built in 1905 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places – and in seven new architect-designed buildings.

The new structures will be grouped near the existing buildings, keeping them out of view from Ackert Hook Road, and preserving the site’s natural beauty. Properties adjoining the buildings will be enhanced with walking trails, stone walls and natural resources.

This will revive a site that years ago housed Daytop Village, a substance-abuse treatment center, and has since been vacant. The careful planning of Rock Ledge ensures it will be far less busy and intense than Daytop Village. That center was a heavily active site due to numerous employees arriving and departing each day, frequent transitions of residents to and from onsite programs, a steady stream of trucks providing deliveries and services, and other community disruptions.

Rock Ledge’s commitment to blending history and contemporary amenities include the adaptive reuse of structures that include a three-story Italian Renaissance-style Manor House, stone barn and carriage house. The development will restore and maintain historic resources that would otherwise remain vacant and potentially be left to decay.
